Ronnie Lane bass, vocals Steve Marriott guitar, vocals Kenney Jones drums Jimmy Winston keyboards 1965 Ian McLagan keyboards 1966 forward In 1965 Ronnie Lane formed the band Small Faces with
Steve Marriott and Kenney Jones and were soon joined by Ian McLagan. Ronnie Lane formed Small Faces with Steve Marriott and Kenney Jones in 1965, who were soon joined by Ian McLagan. The name “Small Faces” was chosen as all the band members were under 5’5″ in height!
The Small Faces consisted of Lane on bass guitar, Marriott as guitarist and lead vocalist, Kenney Jones as drummer, and Winston on keyboards.
They made their debut in 1965, with Ian McLagan replacing Winston in November 1965. Lane and Marriott began writing hit songs consistently, including “Itchycoo Park” and “All or Nothing”.
The band, with Ian McLagan on keyboards, had great success in British and European singles charts.
Small Faces 1968 concept album "Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake" topped the UK Albums Chart for six weeks, with Ronnie and Stevie writing almost all the songs.
In 1969, Stevie left to set up Humble Pie, so the guys brought in Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart, who had just made a couple of classic British Blues albums with Jeff Beck, and adapted their name to The Faces.
The band disbanded in 1969 as Marriott left the group .
The group reformed during the late 70s but Lane did not join them as he was beginning to suffering from multiple sclerosis.

AllMusic Review by Bruce Eder, excerpt
"In Memoriam was a rather hastily conceived ten-song LP issued by Immediate Records in the wake of the group's breakup in early 1969 -- slapped together from a quintet of live tracks recorded at Newcastle Town Hall and five odd single B-sides and cuts from what would have been the group's next album. Immediate quickly deleted this album and folded its contents into the double LP The Autumn Stone." |
The Autumn Stone is a posthumous retrospective double album, and the second compilation album released in the UK by Small Faces in 1969 on the Immediate label.
