Phil Smee & Andy Warhol
"In 1975 I met Andy Warhol who drew this quick sketch of a 'Campbell’s Pea Soup Can' for me, with his unmistakable signature. I had a chat to him, and he asked me what I did, etc. I can’t remember whatI said to him as I was talking to one of my biggest influences in art and creativity!" ~Phil Smee
This was before Phil Smee himself would go on to become a great pop art icon!

Phil Smee on Phil Smee
"I am a graphic designer - with a vast knowledge of the history of music - responsible for countless highly original designs - from Apple Records to Zappa. I love my work - and bring the 'Phil Smee' touch to every project - from a logo design to a multi-CD Book and Box Set."
Phil Lloyd-Smee was also the Owner, A&R, Producer and Designer of Waldo's Records from 1977-1982 and the owner of Bam-Caruso Records from 1983-1992.
Phil Smee and Waldo's Records
1977-1982
1977-1982
The St Albans based record label Waldos Records was run by owner
Phil Smee from his front room which between 1977 and 1982 put out 20 unique and genre defining releases on 7” single and cassette tape. John Peel was a big fan and played Waldos records as soon as they were released. John’s appreciation resulted in two Waldos bands
(The Tea Set and The Bodies) having Peel Sessions played on the same night in 1980. Waldos also put on “Package” gigs in the town which gave an opportunity for a number of up-and-coming local bands to play to a large audience. Many of these artists are still involved in music and the arts to this day. |

Phil Smee and Bam-Caruso Records
1983-1992
1983-1992
Independent Record Company with over 100 releases - from deep psychedelic catalogue to new artists: including Palace of Light, The Fortunate Sons, Nick Haeffner, Paul Roland, The Wild Kitchen, Mabel Joy, and many many more. Pioneering re-issue label specialising in the highly-collectable "RUBBLE" 60's Psych series.
The pioneering record label Bam-Caruso, started in 1983 by Phil Smee, was grown from the dying embers of St Albans "Waldo's Records", with a mission to record the best new sounds emerging from the UK and America's so called "paisley underground", and merge them with rare and unknown psyche and garage/pop gems from the '60s, to be licensed in.
|
Its colourful reputation rests on "The Rubble Collection" series, a continuing set of various artists compilations which together create a definitive overview of Freakbeat and pop-psych styles.
RPM's Bam-Caruso Records (see RPM Records (2)), the 60's psych reissue imprint of Cherry Red Records, was set up with the co-operation of BC founder Phil Smee to reissue the old BC catalogue and more.
The "Rubble" compilation series has been reissued by

Freakbeat
"Freakbeat is a term I invented in 1984 to describe a certain type of 60’s music, falling mid-way between Beat and Psychedelic. A sort of untamed wild hybrid sound as heard on records by Wimple Winch, Master’s Apprentices, The Craig, etc. It was in the title of one of the compilations I released on my Bam-Caruso label. It stuck and is now used worldwide. There’s even a large records shop in Los Angeles called Freakbeat Records. WAHOO!" ~Philip Lloyd-Smee
Freakbeat - is a loosely defined subgenre of rock and roll music developed mainly by harder-driving
British groups, often those with a mod following, during the Swinging London period of the mid-to late 1960s.The genre bridges British Invasion R&B, beat and psychedelia.

The term was coined by English music journalist Phil Smee,
"The real focus on Freakbeat was always 1965-1967."

Phil Smee- Owner, writer and designer of Strange Things Magazine
March 1988 - March 1990
March 1988 - March 1990
"An highly influential publication that set a new standard for music magazines... now emulated by Mojo etc.
Great fun, lots of hard work... lost money hand over fist!" ~Phil Smee
Great fun, lots of hard work... lost money hand over fist!" ~Phil Smee
Recently included in Ugly Things’ list of the greatest fanzines of all time, Strange Things was different from the run-of-the-mill zines. Although rooted in the great music of the ’60s and early ’70s, the editors and writers found room to cover everything from Krazy Kat comics to the Barbarella movie. Excellent, entertaining writing from Brian Hogg and colleagues, and a timelessly cool layout. More magazines should be like this!
Strange Things (Are Happening) was a part of Bam-Caruso Records.
Bam-Caruso, the pioneering record label, started in 1983 by Phil Smee, growing from the dying embers of St Albans “Waldo’s Records”, with a mission to record the best new sounds emerging from the UK and America’s so called “paisley underground”, and merge them with rare and unknown psyche and garage/pop gems from the ’60s, to be licensed in.

"Here's a bloke whose record collection may well be worth as much as your house"
Philip Llyod-Smee's Studio
I’m lucky to have quite a big house and the studio you see in those pictures is the 3rd floor. I’m having this top floor remodeled as I have so many records now that I need to get the collection organized. In fact, I have an overspill of about 2000 albums in a room downstairs, which is the TV room. I keep jazz, classical, soundtracks, country, and a few other categories down there.

Word Magazine - January 21, 2010
"This week we welcome Phil Smee to the pod. Phil's name is somewhere in your record collection, probably on a reissue which he will have either designed, annotated or helped compile. Phil is the one we have to thank for the Motorhead logo, that massive boxed set of Elektra records that came out a few years back, the Bam Caruso label and the invention of an entire genre known as Freakbeat. He brought along mint condition copies of the first Pink Floyd single, a reggae tune written by Nick Drake (both pictured left) and an early pressing of "Hey Jude" on the Parlophone label. We talked records old, new, borrowed, reissued and rare." |
