Ronnie Lane and Faces
Faces Band Line Up 1969-1973
Ronnie Lane formed the band Faces with Ian Mclagan,
Kenney Jones, Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart in 1969. Good-time Blues Rock was one of the offshoots of British music at the end of the 60s, and the Faces were at the forefront of the movement. Bass player and songwriter Ronnie Lane was the heart and soul of the band.
The group regularly toured Britain, Europe and the United States and were among the top-grossing live acts in their peak era.
From 1970-1973 Faces toured the world, playing enormous venues as ‘stadium rock’ took off, selling truck-loads of records.
Ronnie Lane shared primary songwriting duties with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, composing, or co-composing, many of their best-loved pieces and taking a central role during the recording of their fourth and final album, Ooh La La, particularly, as the band’s front man Rod Stewart flowered in his own solo career.

Ronnie Lane Leaves Faces
In June 1973, unhappy due to poor reviews of the Ooh La La album and Stewart’s lack of commitment, Ronnie Lane quit Faces, making his last appearance at the Sundown Theatre in Edmonton, London, on June 4, 1973.

Lane's role as bassist was taken over by Tetsu Yamauchi (who had replaced Andy Fraser in Free), but the group made no further studio albums following Lane’s departure and the group split in 1975.

"A group of us were there! Amazing. At one point, Rod started kicking a number of footballs out into the audience, the guy next to me caught one. The circle was bouncing up and down, I thought it might collapse - the place had been built as a cinema, not for crazy Faces rockers!" -Fab YouTube Faces Fan
Also on this day, June 4 (1997), Ronnie Lane passed away due to MS. You are still much loved, Ronnie!
Ronnie Lane - Post Faces
Ronnie Lane formed Slim Chance and had a solo career that ended prematurely when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He also worked on an album with Who guitarist Pete Townshend, Rough Mix.[11] In 1981 Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott collaborated on the album The Legendary Majik Mijits.[14]
Ron Wood joined the Rolling Stones as a full member
Ian McLagan stated in a 2004 interview that Townshend also asked him to join the Who, but he had already promised Keith Richards that he would tour as a Rolling Stones sideman. McLagan moved to the United States, where he formed Ian McLagan & the Bump Band.[13]
Tetsu Yamauchi returned to his native Japan, where he recorded and toured as a jazz musician.
Rod Stewart's solo career has been extremely successful.
Faces re-formed for the encore of Rod Stewart's Wembley Stadium concert in 1986. Ronnie Lane was by then suffering from multiple sclerosis, and on stage to sing in his wheelchair, but was unable to play bass; Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones filled in for him.
Ronnie Lane made his final concert appearance in 1992 at a Ronnie Wood show with Ian McLagan on keyboards. Ronnie Lane passed away 4 June 1997.

Faces Albums with Ronnie Lane (1970-March 1973)
Released in early 1970, First Step is the debut album by the British group Faces. The album was released only a few months after the Faces had formed from the ashes of the Small Faces (Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan)
and The Jeff Beck Group (from which Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood hailed.) The album is credited to the Small Faces on all North American issues and reissues,[1] while record labels for initial vinyl printings give the title as The First Step.[2] |
