Ronnie Lane Retrospective - by Yan Calmeyer Friis
When I arrived at Ronnies place back in 1983, an American journalist from Musician was there, and when he heard I was from Norway he started bragging about how he had been with Mark Knopfler a couple of days earlier, and how Knopfler had played him the tapes of the Dylan-album "Infidels" that wasn't yet released. "It's so good", he gloated, "just you wait and see! Mark produced it, and he is so pleased with it."
Now, this patronizing guy annoyed me insanely, I couldn't help cutting him down to size. I grabbed a cassette from my pocket that had "Bob Dylan - Infidels, rejected Knopfler mix" written right across it. "Or do you mean this?", I continued, wagging another cassette in front of him, this one stating "Bob Dylan - Infidels, final mix". The guy just stood there, his jaw hitting the floor.
I had very good connections with the Dylan community and Columbia Records in the US at the time, so I was indeed very familiar with the coming Dylan-album. Seems Mark Knopfler didn't know that his mix had been rejected yet. Ronnie just chuckled. The Musician guy kept his mouth shut after that.
By the way I also met Ronnie in 1975 (I believe it was '75) when he took Slim Chance to Oslo. He gave me an a very warm interview. I will try to find it for you. Anyway, not many knew much about Slim Chance at the time, not in Oslo, so there were hardly more than five or ten paying customers - plus a couple of guys from the record company, members of Norwegian countryrock-band Flying Norwegians, and me. The concert was absolute marvellous, they even returned for encores. So impressing. It is impossible not love Ronnie Lane and his vision, Slim Chance.
Kind regards
Yan
